Guest Blogger: Adam Franklin on Social Media for Business

Adam Frankline of Blue Wire MediaAre you going to take the plunge?

Many companies are inching closer to the ‘edge’ & taking their first glimpse into the crazy world of social media!   If this is you – well done – I applaud you!

This is admirable because I appreciate how scary social media land looks from the outside – people can anything… staff may land us in strife, a rogue ex-employee may come back to haunt us or a disgruntled customer might vent.  Any one of those scenarios is enough to keep a self respecting marketer, PR or legal eagle awake at night!

Of course, we already know what people can already publish the good, the bad & the ugly on the web – easily, for free & instantly – whether we like it or not.  So where does that leave us, as we stand peering over the ‘edge’ deciding whether we jump in?

I am a firm believer that social media & the web has changed the way people connect & communicate forever.

But how do you adapt?

This a question that many organisations are debating. Some are embracing social media (great!), some are cautiously dipping their toe in the water (OK) & others are choosing to stick their head in the sand hoping it goes away (dangerous).  I can honestly say that you can come really unstuck if you ignore it!

There are hundreds of different social media websites that enable you to connect, comment & cast judgement. The ones you’re likely to have heard of are – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube & Blogs, but there are literally hundreds more.

What do I need to do?

Regardless of how you choose to adapt to social media, I urge you to secure your own name & your organisation’s name – even if you don’t intend to use them for a little while.  Imagine if someone else pinched yours whilst you were busy contemplating?

This is where UD comes to the rescue!  You can simply use UD.com to quickly check whether your social media profiles are available, not to mention your domain names & trademarks. So get in there, secure your names & get involved!
